Investment Piece: Classic Trench

Front
Undeniably one of the classic wardrobe pieces is the trench coat. Ladies we must give it up for the boys, because this is one item we have hijacked from them. The invention of the trench coat is in dispute by two of the great British fashion houses. Aquascutum's claim dates back to 1850, while Burberry's claim is founded in 1901. This is when Thomas Burberry submitted a design for an Army officers raincoat to the United Kingdom War Office. The trench coat was designed  to be incorporated as a form of military dress (as if the double breasted front and epaulets didn't give this away) an alternative to the heavy Serge greatcoats worn by soldiers at the time.

Traditionally the trench-coat is double breasted, incorporating 10 buttons, wide lapels, a storm flap, removable insulated lining, raglan sleeves and pockets which button close. It is usually made of a weatherproof heavy duty cotton such as gabardine, or leather.  The classic Lengths come in lengths from above the knee to mid calf.
The classic color of a trench coat is khaki.

Back
Now while I sincerely thank Acquascutum and Burberry for their efforts, I do not have the resources to purchase one of their trench coats. My first "trench" like coat was not made in the traditional sense. It was a poly/cotton mix and had no lining,  in essence it was more like a shell than a coat. However last November I stumbled upon the GAP's trench coat offerings for Autumn/Winter 13. Let's just say GAP hit the nail not only on the head but all the way through the board.

Inner lining
First of all these coats possessed ALL the traditional "Trench Coat" elements. the GAP A/W 13 trench coats are made from 100% cotton. The outer shell is definitely a heavy gabardine, the inner lining is also made from 100% cotton twill. Other elements include a 6 button double breasted front, buttoned epaulettes, buttoned wrists, storm flap and belt.

Lining pattern - upclose

collar - with hook and eye fastening

buttoned epaulettes

6 button double breasted front

buttoned wrists / buttoned pockets

GAP Classic Trench A/W 13 (still being sold) 59.99
This trench coat is a contender in the trench coat stakes. The coat itself is heavy, which signifies the quality of the materials used. It keeps out the cold/ snow/ and is suitable for light to mid range rain showers.  After washing it dries well and the material keeps it's shape.

It is a great unisex gift seasonal/birthday/anniversary/graduation (my brother keeps trying to steal mine to wear out) and it is firmly in the affordable price category. What I like about this coat is he fact there isn't a compromise,. Yes this coat might be cheaper than a Burberry Trench, but apart from the label, this coat offers everything I expect from a traditional  military inspired trench coat.

I would urge you to go and have a look/feel/try it on of this coat
if there is a GAP store nearby in your local town.
As for now this has the Graduate Fashionista stamp of approval.

The shorter sleeved shirts would go great with my Zara Shorts, my work trousers and also as a layering piece under my navy suit. The longer sleeved shirts would look great on their own paired with either my Zara tulip skirt or my asymmetrical peplum skirt from Miss Selfridge. These are just a  few of the outfit combinations, I  have come up with off the top of my head.

Stay cool my lovelies.

What to wear to work - Blue/ Purple Structured Dress

This dress is an anomaly, to my naked eye it is blue, however it photographs purple. On the Website it was described as purple so *throws hands in the air.*

The best thing about this dress is the simplicity. The design features a high neck, small pockets on the sides,   cap sleeves and a V in the back. The versatility of this dress means that it can be easily styled this with a cardigan (white), a blazer or short jacket with rolled back sleeves, a necklace if wearing the dress on its own or a wide belt to accentuate the waist.

The fit of the dress is neither tight, nor clingy. so no worries about it splitting or bursting seams if you have to make a mad dash or two across town on your lunch hour.

What to Wear to Work - Black Low Heeled Court Shoe

My current work shoes are coming onto a year old now. They might be aging but they are still full of life. However I would like to add a new work to to my work wear wardrobe. My browsing has lead me to an amazing discovery. A great pair of court shoes, suitable for the office and well as an alternative pair. I am calling it the look for less ---> the shoe edition.

Image 1 of Whistles Cassini Black Heeled Shoes
Whistles Cassini Black Heeled shoe £125
- Made with a soft suede upper
- Classic slip on styling
- Pointed toe
- Slim sole
- Low point heel

Office Vital court Black microfibre
Office Vital Court Black Microfibre Shoe £15
The Vital Court is made up of a black microfibre upper, Leather lining, Leather sock, Synthetic sole and a 6.5cm heel height.

These shoes both meet my requirements for a functional work shoe. 3 inches or less, leather and a neutral colour. The Whistle's Cassini courts  are pricey,  work shoes just like bags are one area of your work wear wardrobe, where it is worth spending that bit extra. I consider them a good long term investment. My Dune courts were £75 and apart from replacing the tips they are still going strong.  If you are a new graduate/young professional/city girl I would recommend picking up a pair of either shoe. As for me I will be counting my sheckles to purchase the office pair asap!!!! The Whistles pair could be acquired after the implementation of a longer term saving plan.

What to Wear to Work - The Blue Dress

Ready for my close up

The colours are coming out with the weather heating up, the sun is still playing hide and seek with us but we forge ahead nonetheless. This blue cap sleeve dress is a lovely number to pull out of your closet for a day on the job/at the office/work meetings or even if you are out of office meeting clients.

The dress gathers at the waist, and meets a faux panel, then drapes around the hips. I think the draping around the hips is great for curvy girls, since it follows the shape of the female body form, yet leaves room for  movement. Therefore it is a lot less restricting that the traditional style of tighter fitting dresses.

Pockets, perfect for lip balm/lipstick and a snack

What to Wear to Work - Beige dress ft Black blazer

"The little Gucci dress, the little Gucci dress or the little Gucci dress." - one of the most iconic fashionistas of our time said this in a movie. Not knowing who this lady, is the equivalent of liking that horrendous bird on Carrie's head in the Sex and the City movie.

The sun is out and the dresses come out. After hiding away under layers of thick tights and trousers hemlines get shorter as the weather heats up. Here we have a little ensemble compliments the fashion houses of Forever21 and Zara.

This is the dress on it's own,  I  usually wear this dress sand cardigan or blazer. To get over the bra strap showing issue, I cross  the bra straps over in an "x" shape.

What to Wear to Work - Sheath dress with White shirt

The French gave us crepes, Madame Clavelle, Madeline and CoCo Chanel. I will be the first to admit, this does look a bit like uniform. However there are some days when I want an outfit that says "I am here to work"  something simple yet effective. A sheath dress is good for under layering shirts/blouses as well as over layering jackets/blazers/cardigans.
